For additional information about defense spending, military fleets, DoD Contracts and more, please visit our Procurement Section or the Defense Database.
Welcome to the Major Aircraft Program Section on AeroWeb. This section covers DoD Spending
on major aircraft systems from FY 2011 to FY 2013 (starting October 1, 2012).
Below, you find a database of 65 DoD aircraft programs (pretty much all of them), including fighters, bombers,
transports/airlift, military special mission aircraft, rotorcraft/helicopters, trainer aircraft,
and unmanned aerial vehicles and systems (UAV/UAS).
For each program, you can access information about total DoD spending on that program in FY11, FY12, and FY13
as well as procurement spending, research expenditures, and the number of aircraft purchased.
Our data tells you exactly how much was spent on each program, e.g. RDT&E expenses for the KC-46A Tanker, # of V-22s
purchased etc. By clicking on a program below, you access that system's profile - giving you access to general information
about the aircraft (specs, engines, weapons/armament, mission/role etc.) and DoD budget data downloads for each
program (so you can see the official spending documentation to verify the accuracy of our data and access even more info).
Note that our data may not in all instances match the numbers in the official DoD Major Acquisition Program Data Book,
mainly due to the fact that we also include spending on modifications (to provide a more accurate view of how much is spent
on each system). Therefore, we are convinced that the data provided below is more extensive, more accurate
and more detailed than what is published by the DoD.
In Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 (October 1, 2012 - September 30, 2013), the F-35 Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter) defense program is the DoD aircraft program that by far receives the most funding with expected direct total spending of $9.17 billion. In FY2013, the DoD procures 29 F-35s at at a cost of $6.47 billion (31 and 35 aircraft procured in FY11 and FY12), while the program accounts for another $2.70 billion in Research, Development, Test & evaluation (RDT&E) funds.
Other top aircraft programs include the P-8A Poseidon ASW/ASuW aircraft, F/A-18E/F Super Hornet,
V-22 Osprey, KC-46A New Tanker (KC-X), CH-47 Chinook, UH-60 Black Hawk, AH-64 Apache Longbow,
C-130 Hercules, and the C-5 Galaxy/C-5M Super Galaxy.
In FY2013, the DoD decided to cancel the C-27J Spartan program, the C-130 Avionics Modernization Program,
and the RQ-4 Global Hawk Block 30.
