In 2011, field maintenance makes up 48% of all military aircraft MRO or $31.7 billion followed by airframe, engine, and component MRO. North America is the biggest military aircraft MRO market at $32.3 billion or 49% of total military aircraft MRO spending followed by Europe at 22%. The vast majority of North American military MRO originates from the United States.

In 2012, global military aircraft MRO spending is forecast to drop 5.3% to $62.5 billion. From 2012 to 2015, the market will remain flat at around $62-63 billion.

Growth in Global Military MRO Spending by Type of Aircraft | 2010-15

From 2011 to 2012, the global market for military aircraft MRO will contract 5.3% and stay at around $62-63 billion through 2015.

On the bright side, MRO of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) will grow by 29% annually followed by attack helicopters and utility helicopters at +5% and +4%, respectively. General aviation aircraft, tankers, and tactical transport aircraft MRO will grow 2-3% annually, while strategic transport aircraft MRO and trainer MRO will be flat. On the negative side, MRO spending on special mission aircraft and fighter/attack aircraft will decrease by 1% and 6% annually.

Despite the expected negative contraction in global military aircraft MRO in 2012, spending in all regions but North America and Europe will actually increase.

With a more than 73% share of global military MRO spending in 2010, negative growth in North America and Europe will have a massive impact on overall world growth. Contracting at a 2% annual rate, these two key regions cause global MRO to drop by 0.4% annually - this despite +7% growth in military aircraft MRO in the Middle East, +6% in Lating America, +3% in Asia-Pacific, and +2% in Africa.
