Orbital Sciences Corp. develops and manufactures small- and medium-class rockets and space systems for commercial, military and civil government customers, including the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), NASA and other U.S. government agencies. The company's products and services are grouped into three reportable business segments: launch vehicles, satellites and space systems, and advanced space programs. The company's products include the Pegasus, Taurus and Minotaur space launch vehicles as well as booster vehicles for the Missile Defense Agency's GMD program.

Orbital's general strategy is to develop and expand a core integrated business of space and launch systems technologies and products, focusing on the design and manufacture of affordable rockets, satellites and other space systems in order to establish and expand positions in niche markets that have not typically been emphasized by Orbital's larger competitors. Another part of the company's strategy is to seek customer contracts that will fund new product development and enhancements to its existing launch vehicle and space systems product lines.

Orbital Sciences was incorporated in Delaware in 1987 to consolidate the operations of two predecessor entities. The company is headquartered in Dulles, Virginia.
