Honeywell's research activities are directed toward the discovery and development of new products, technologies and processes
and the development of new uses for existing products. The company's principal research and development activities are in
the U.S., Europe, China and India.
In the years from 2008 to 2012, Honeywell spent the following on R&D activities (company-funded):
2012: $1,847 million, 4.9% of total revenues
2011: $1,799 million, 4.9% of total revenues
2010: $1,450 million, 4.5% of total revenues
2009: $1,321 million, 4.3% of total revenues
2008: $1,543 million, 4.2% of total revenues
The 3% increase in R&D spending in 2012 compared to 2011 was mainly due to increased expenditures on the development
of new technologies to support existing and new aircraft platforms in Honeywell's Aerospace segment and new product development
in the Automation and Control Solutions and Performance Materials Technologies segments.
The increase in R&D spending of 24% in 2011 compared to 2010 was mainly due to increased expenditures on the development of
new technologies to support existing and new aircraft platforms in Honeywell's Aerospace segment, the development of turbocharging
systems for new diesel and gas applications in the company's Transportation Systems segment and new product development in
its Automation and Control Solutions segment. The increase in R&D expense of 10% in 2010 compared to 2009 was mainly
due to additional product design and development costs in Automation and Control Solutions and increased expenditures on the
development of products for new aircraft platforms.
Customer-sponsored (principally the U.S. Government) R&D activities
amounted to an additional $835 million, $867 million, $874 million, $852 million, and $903 million
in 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009 and 2008, respectively.
